Don t forget to keep an eye on your little ones this festive season, some common items which can be found around the house can be very dangerous and even be life threatening! Below are a list of common household items and plants which we should be extra careful of; Poisonous Plants: Many popular holiday plants are poisonous to animals including mistletoe and holly. Remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets – especially birds. Poinsettias are not poisonous to pets or people. This has been a long-standing rumour perpetuated for decades. Some pets may have a sensitivity to the latex contained in the plant and may get diarrhea or vomit. Tinsel is Trouble: Having a Christmas tree and pets can be troublesome. Ensure the tree is well-secured and try to place the decorations above paw height. Using string to hang decorations instead of hooks helps, as hooks can be easily dislodged. Toy Watch: Avoid purchasing pet toys with small or soft pieces that can be chewed and swallowed. Nylon bones tend to splinter less than plastic ones. Be sure to inspect pet toys regularly and discard deteriorating ones.

Facts on stroke Here are some key points about stroke. More detail and supporting information is in the main article. During a stroke, the brain does not receive enough oxygen or nutrients, causing brain cells to die. There are three main kinds of stroke: ischemic strokes, hemorrhagic strokes and transient ischemic attacks. Ischemic strokes are caused by a narrowing or blocking of arteries to the brain. Hemorrhagic strokes are caused by blood vessels in and around the brain bursting or leaking. Strokes need to be diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible in order to minimize brain damage. Remembering the F.A.S.T. acronym can help with recognizing the onset of stroke (Face, Arms, Speed, Time). Treatment depends on the type of stroke. Ischemic strokes can be treated with clot-busting drugs. Hemorrhagic strokes can be treated with surgery to repair or block blood vessel weaknesses. The most effective way to prevent strokes is through maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
